NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Athletes competed in the New York City triathlon on Sunday, though the running, biking and swimming race was shortened due to the heat.

The race took place on the sixth day of a heat wave that killed one person in New York City.

Organizers shortened the biking section from 24.8 to 12.4 miles and the running section from 6.2 miles to 2.5 miles.

Temperatures hovered in the mid-80s Sunday morning when the race started and reached 96 degrees later in the day.

The National Weather Service's heat advisory for New York is slated to last until 8 p.m. on Sunday.

Danilo Pimentel, 35, won the men's competition and Amy Cymerman, 30, took home the gold for the women's competition.

The decision to cut the triathlon short comes after a runner died while finishing the Brooklyn Half Marathon on an unseasonably warm day in May.
