NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Newark police officer was convicted Wednesday for collecting $46,000 in unnecessary sick pay over the course of eight months — even as he worked as a hospital security guard on the side, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
Anthony Gibson, 55, is also facing drug dealing charges in an unrelated case.
The 25-year veteran of the force took sick leave with full pay and benefits from March 6, 2018 until he was suspended without pay on Nov. 2, 2018.
He worked as a private security guard at a hospital for a month during that period, netting $4,700 in addition to his police salary.
He faces a mandatory five-year prison sentence for official misconduct and theft by unlawful taking.
Gibson was arrested in 2018 for distribution of drugs, conspiracy and official misconduct for his alleged role in a cocaine dealing scheme.
He pleaded not guilty to the drug dealing charges, and the case is ongoing.
