Passaic Mayor Hector Lora says the roof of the building at 183 Highland Ave. collapsed as a result of heavy rains from Ida last week at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Lora says the building was evacuated Wednesday night, leaving 51 people displaced from their homes and staying at a recreation center or a senior center.
Among the displaced are children the night before the city’s first day of school Thursday.
Ida wreaked havoc on New Jersey, causing at least 27 deaths in the state and spawning multiple tornadoes.
