Patrick Carney, 50, was pitching around 9:30 p.m. at Veterans Park in Berkeley Township on June 1 when Ryan O’Rorke hit a ball that struck him, according to a criminal complaint filed by the Berkeley Police Department.

An argument broke out between the two men and other players at first base, which escalated to shoving before Carney slugged O’Rorke in the face.

The victim had to undergo surgery to repair a fracture caused by the off-duty officer’s alleged attack.

Carney, who has been working as a police officer since 1996, now faces charges for aggravated assault and attempt to cause significant bodily injury.

The Lakewood Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit is also investigating the attack.
