NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police arrested a New Jersey man on Tuesday and charged him with choking a 23-year-old woman unconscious in front of a Times Square hotel last month, which caused injuries that led to her death.
Jaheem Warren, 33, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, two counts of assault and two counts of strangulation in the Oct. 29 incident, police said.
Warren is accused of choking Leslie Torres in front of the Riu Plaza New York Times Square Hotel, located at 305 West 46th Street, early that morning. Police said that the two did not know one another.
A passerby spotted Torres unconscious after the attack and called 911. EMS rushed her to Mount Sinai West Hospital in critical condition, but she succumbed to her injuries six days later, dying on Nov. 4. There were no signs of sexual assault.
Torres lived just around the block from where she was assaulted, on West 45th Street, and police confirmed to 1010 WINS that she was not homeless.
Warren, of Prospect Park, New Jersey, was arrested on Tuesday. He has no prior arrests in New York City, though he reportedly has an extensive criminal history in his home state.
