NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — In July 2026, the Port of New York and New Jersey will host the largest fleet of tall ships in modern times to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial at a nautical event that millions are expected to attend.

Sail4th 250, an official multi-state, international government project, will host vessels from over 30 nations “in the spirit of goodwill.” These will include 60 tall ships, vessels from the Navy, Coast Guard and government as well as 10,000 uniformed sailors.

A promotional video describing the event was provided by Sail4th 250, and emphasizes the non-profit’s focus on honoring those who founded the nation by sailing over the Atlantic on tall ships, remembering those who built the country up and celebrating the current citizens of New York, New Jersey and the U.S.

In an attempt to educate and engage “by showcasing the spirit of international cooperation that has long been a hallmark of maritime tradition,” the ships will dock throughout the port and be open for four days of free public visitation during the event, slated for July 3 through July 8.

“As a sea-faring nation, we celebrate the brotherhood and sisterhood of the sea. The Tall Ships represent a common bond among peoples of all nations,” president of Sail4th 250 Chris O’Brien said

Among the international ships in attendance will be the Juan Sebastian de Elcano of Spain, the training ship of the Spanish navy and third-tallest tall ship in the world, and the Danmark of Denmark, a full-rigged ship owned by the Danish Martime Authroity that was used during WWII to help train US Coast Guard Academy cadets.

“There is only one natural place to host the biggest birthday party in American history and that is right here in the greatest city in the world. On the anniversary of our nation’s 250th birth, New Yorkers will enjoy the sight of majestic fleets from around the world coming to our shores,” Mayor Eric Adams said.

According to Sail4th 250, the Port of New York and New Jersey was chosen to host the event due to its protected harbor and historical significance. With the Hudson River serving as a stronghold during the American Revolution and Ellis Island and South Street Seaport drawing in millions of immigrants, the port is meaningful to the foundation of American independence.

“The eyes of the world will be on the Port of New York and New Jersey in a positive way as we mark our nation’s 250th Anniversary, and the spirit of democracy itself,” O’Brien said.
