NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – New York’s two largest mass vaccination sites, run jointly by FEMA and the state, opened in Brooklyn and Queens on Wednesday.

The federally backed vaccination sites at Medgar Evers College in Crown Heights and York College in Jamaica each have the capacity to administer 3,000 doses of the vaccine every day. They will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“We’re going to save lives at this site,” Cuomo said while touring the Jamaica site on Wednesday morning. “This site is going to save lives.”

People can make appointments at the sites by going to New York's “Am I Eligible” website or by calling the state's COVID-19 Vaccination Hotline at 1-833-NYS-4-VAX (1-833-697-4829). Scheduling for the sites began Saturday.

The sites will mobilize federal clinical and non-clinical staff and contractors who will work with the National Guard, New York state, local leaders and community-based organizations to establish and operate the sites.

The MTA is launching a pilot program to enhance bus service to connect residents of the two boroughs to the vaccination sites.

The state is also partnering with faith leaders in both boroughs to launch a vaccination drive aimed at encouraging more community members to sign up for vaccination appointments at the sites using phone banking.

The sites are part of the state’s ongoing efforts to “fight vaccine hesitancy and bring the vaccine to communities underserved by traditional health care institutions,” Cuomo said in a press release.

For the first week of scheduling, appointments at the two sites are initially reserved specifically for New Yorkers currently eligible for vaccination living in areas with low vaccination rates in counties and boroughs. After one week, appointments at each site will then be made available to all eligible residents of the site's host borough, Cuomo said.

“Between now and Saturday morning, appointments will only be filled for those people in ZIP codes that are surrounding this area,” the governor said.
