NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Democratic mayoral candidates Andrew Yang and Kathryn Garcia campaigned together in Queens in an unusual scene on Saturday.

Garcia made clear the alliance wasn’t a cross-endorsement.

“I would encourage my voters to follow their preferences,” the former city sanitation commissioner said.

Yang on the other hand was a little more generous with his support of Garcia.

“Anyone who is supporting me as their first choice, please do have Kathryn Garcia on your ballot. We need to make sure that candidates who are going to do the right thing for New Yorkers get into City Hall,” Yang said.

The point of the joint campaigning was to encourage supporters to take part in ranked-choice voting ahead of Primary Day on Tuesday. Early voting wraps up Sunday.

A recent poll by the New York Post showed Brooklyn borough president Eric Adams in first place in the Democratic race, followed by civil rights attorney Maya Wiley, Garcia and Yang, respectively.

This primary may be especially hard to predict though, since it will be the first to use ranked-choice voting, with voters ranking up to five candidates.

Under the city's system, ranked choice procedures only kick in if no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote. With such a large field of legitimate contenders, that’s likely to happen this year in the Democratic primary.
