NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A mortally injured man who was pulled from the Hudson River on Wednesday evening had been beaten with a rock by a 19-year-old man who is in custody, police said Thursday.
The 42-year-old victim was found floating in the river near West 158th Street in Washington Heights as NYPD officers responded to a 911 call around 5 p.m.
He was unconscious and unresponsive at the time and suffering from head trauma, police said.
The FDNY’s marine division pulled him from the water and EMS transported him to Mount Sinai Morningside, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators soon learned he’d been in a physical fight with a 19-year-old man.
During the confrontation, the younger man struck the older man in the head with a rock, causing him to fall into the water, police said.
Witnesses reportedly saw the assailant then use multiple rocks to attack the victim as he was down in the water.
The suspect, identified as Miguel Cortez, of the Bronx, was picked up near the attack scene and arrested on a murder charge.
The victim hasn’t yet been identified. His relationship to the suspect, if any, wasn’t immediately clear.
