NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A storm is approaching New York City, with heavy rain and gusts of wind expected in the Tri-State on Thursday, potentially dampening early Halloween festivities but likely drying out before the actual holiday and Sunday’s marathon, AccuWeather forecasts.
Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday directed state agencies to prepare for the rainy weather and urged New Yorkers to exercise caution as the storm system rolls in, noting that 1-2 inches are expected across the state, with higher amounts possible in NYC, Western New York, Southern Tier, Mid-Hudson and on Long Island.
“As this storm makes its way to New York tonight, I urge everyone to prepare for the forecasted high-speed wind gusts, heavy rainfall, flooding and possible power outages,” Hochul said. “New Yorkers should text 333111 to check your local forecast, and stay vigilant as the storm passes.”
Wednesday night will be cloudy and breezy with occasional rain and drizzle as the low dips to 50, AccuWeather said.
This will lead into a windy and wet Thursday, with rain becoming heavy at times from midday through the afternoon. Flooding is expected in poor drainage areas, along with minor coastal flooding, as wind gusts reach 40-50 miles per hour, the governor and AccuWeather said.
The rain should end early, with temperatures dropping from a high of 60 to a low of 52 during the clearing.
Mayor Eric Adams posted about the storm on social media, joking that New Yorkers should not let their “Home Depot skeleton blow away” amid gusty winds.
Friday will be cool with strong winds and times of sun and clouds, AccuWeather said. The high will rise to 57 despite RealFeel temperatures remaining in the 40s much of the time, as wind gusts 40-50 miles per hour persist.
“Right now with the current forecast it looks like the system is going to be out in time for trick-or-treating later in the day on Friday,” NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol told 1010 WINS. “So we don’t anticipate any impacts at this time to Halloween and those types of activities.”
While NYC should stay dry for trick-or-treaters, a shower cannot be ruled out well to the north and west of the city, AccuWeather said.
Saturday will stay breezy and cool with a mix of clouds and sun.
It will likely be dry for the NYC Marathon on Sunday, with some sunshine, highs in the mid-50s and a bit of a breeze at times, according to AccuWeather.
