NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York City’s health department on Wednesday advised beachgoers to avoid swimming and wading at three city beaches due to “inadequate water quality.”

Swimming and wading in the water at Coney Island Beach, South Beach and Wolfe’s Pond Beach is “not recommended” currently, the city’s Emergency Management department tweeted Wednesday morning.

The city issues advisories for its beaches when the water has high levels of bacteria due to storm or sewage runoff, the health department’s website notes.

“Contact with contaminated water may cause vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory illness or infections,” the site says. “Children, pregnant women, the elderly and the chronically ill are at higher risk of getting sick.”

All three beaches are still open Wednesday, the department noted.
