NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The block of East 71st Street between Second and Third avenues looks like any other street in the area—townhouses line the stretch. Except for when you get to the home at 251.
The “Bubble House,” as it’s known, is a four-story modern townhouse built in 1969. And now for the first time in decades, the Upper East Side wonder is on the market. The price is $5.75 million.
With all its personality—most notably the bubbly windows—the house leaves passersby with plenty of thoughts.
Reactions include “unique,” “from another planet,” and “a monstrosity.”
“I thought that it was an homage to ‘2001: A Space Odyssey,’” said one man.
A listing agent, Richard Pretsfelder, calls it an iconic home.
“If you grew up in the city, if you live in the neighborhood, if you’ve ever gone by the house, there’s just nothing like it,” Pretsfelder said.
“People think it was inspired by the Space Age, but my understanding is that it was at least equally inspired, if not more so, by sort of a nautical influence,” he said.
Despite the wild exterior, it’s pretty much a regular townhouse on the inside, Pretsfelder said.
