NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The city's emergency management department on Tuesday announced that swimming will be prohibited at all city beaches Wednesday and Thursday due to the hazardous conditions expected as Hurricane Erin makes landfall.
"We are working with all of our city agencies to prepare for Hurricane Erin and keep New Yorkers safe," Mayor Eric Adams said. "This storm is expected to create dangerous rip currents and large waves, and so we are closing all city beaches to swimming on Wednesday and Thursday. We are asking New Yorkers to take precautions and please sign up for NotifyNYC for additional updates."
Lifeguards and Parks Enforcement Patrol will be posted along the coastline to enforce the prohibition.
Hurricane Erin is expected to cause dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents along the Eastern Seaboard, impacting areas like New York City, Long Island and New Jersey all week.
The NYC area can expect rising wave heights of 15 to 20 feet, dangerous rip currents, and winds up to 30 mph. Minor coastal flooding is also likely, with peak impacts on Thursday and Friday.
