NEW YORK (1010 WINS/ WCBS 880 NEWS) – The NYPD is investigating a series of bomb threat emails sent to local synagogues in the city, stating on Sunday that these threats are currently believed to be hoaxes.
While the NYPD deemed these threats as not credible, they have taken the precaution of deploying additional resources to safeguard religious buildings throughout the city.
“The NYPD is aware of and actively investigating a number of emails that have been sent to synagogues around the city indicating possible bomb threats,” the NYPD statement read. “These emails appear to be part of another series of ‘swatting,’ or hoax threats, similar to campaigns that we have seen nationwide and in our city over the last few months.”
Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn) demanded an investigation and shared the content of one email which stated, “ You will lay in a pool of Blood.”
A coalition of Jewish groups in Brooklyn, including the Crown Heights Shul Association, reported receiving at least 50 similar threats.
“We will continue to work hand in hand with our law enforcement partners, houses of worship, and community leaders to keep New York City safe,” the NYPD said. “We are asking all New Yorkers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to police. If you see something, say something by calling 9-1-1 or 1-888-NYC-SAFE.”
