NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- An NYPD officer was pummeled in the face early Tuesday by a man fleeing an arrest on the Upper East Side, police said.

The NYPD released a photo Wednesday of a suspect they're searching for in the assault on the on-duty officer just before 1 a.m.

Two NYPD officers were attempting to arrest the suspect at East 60th Street and Second Avenue for an earlier crime when he attacked one of them, police said.

He repeatedly punched the officer in the face while fleeing the scene, according to police.

The officer suffered swelling and pain to his face, as well as a sprained shoulder in the attack. He was hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in stable condition.
