VIDEO: NYPD releases footage of shooting that wounded 2 officers in Brooklyn

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD on Monday released surveillance and body camera footage showing the moment a man shot and wounded two officers after shooting his roommate in the legs in Brooklyn on Sunday.

Abdur Rashid Ridhwaan, 44, was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer, attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful imprisonment after he shot the three inside his apartment building on Hawthorne Street, near Flatbush Avenue, in Prospect Lefferts Gardens Sunday night, police said.

Three officers and a sergeant from the 71st Precinct responded to the building around 9:15 p.m. on Sunday after the NYPD received a 911 call reporting a man shot inside, NYPD Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison said at a news briefing Monday afternoon.

As the four started to climb the stairs leading to the building's second floor in a single-file line, Ridhwaan came out of his apartment wearing a blanket over his shoulders, Harrison said.

When the officers started to speak to him, Ridhwaan pulled out a revolver and pointed it at them, he said. The officers drew their weapons and told Ridhwaan to drop the revolver, but he fired at them three times instead, according to Harrison.

One of the bullets hit the first officer in line's bulletproof vest and got lodged inside, Harrison said. Another bullet grazed the shin of the fourth officer in line, he said.

Both officers were taken to nearby hospitals, and were in stable condition as of Monday, he said.

Ridhwaan retreated into his apartment after he shot at the officers, but was ultimately arrested "without any incident" after backup arrived at the scene. He was evaluated at a nearby hospital after the incident, according to Harrison.

Investigators determined Ridhwaan shot his roommate in both legs before the four officers arrived at the building, Harrison said. The roommate was also hospitalized in stable condition, he said.

A revolver, an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a shotgun were recovered from Ridhwaan's apartment, according to Harrison.

"This incident, I'm sure everybody could understand, could have been a lot worse," he said. "By the grace of God, our heroic officers will be going home."
