NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – An NYPD sergeant was attacked with a machete as police responded to a call about an emotionally disturbed man at a Brooklyn apartment on Monday afternoon.

The sergeant, who suffered a slash wound to the side of the head, was among three officers injured in the attack. The other officers suffered hand and shoulder injuries, police said.

The sergeant was in stable condition, and all three officers were expected to recover.

Officers responded around 3:30 p.m. to a call of an emotionally disturbed man at 1151 New York Ave. in East Flatbush. The 911 call was made by the mother of the man, according to the building's super, Jose.

It's unclear what prompted the attack, but as officers were talking with the family, the man screamed and swung the machete at them, according to police and the super.

"The guy went crazy," the super said. "His mother called the police on him. He don't want me to finish painting the room and stuff. And then he hit the police."

The man was taken into custody with charges pending.
