NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An off-duty NYPD officer fatally shot an armed 24-year-old in front of his father as the siblings fought with a group of people early Sunday morning, police said.
The off-duty cop and another officer had just finished their shift at the 46th Precinct and when they noticed the 24-year-old and his 45-year-old dad arguing with the group around 4:15 a.m. outside of 2080 Valentine Avenue — just a block away from their precinct house.
In the middle of the physical altercation, the off-duty cops witnessed the 24-year-old brandish a firearm and fire it several times at the group, said NYPD Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes during a press conference at the scene.
The off-duty officers decided to engage with the father and son, at which point the 24-year-old turned his firearm to the cops, according to Holmes
"The 24-year-old male pointed his gun and fired several times at the officers," Holmes said.
"The officers returned fire, which struck the 24-year-old male in the torso," Holmes added
The 45-year-old father then picked up his injured son's firearm and fired it several times at the officers, according to Holmes.
Following the shooting, the two off-duty cops "immediately" began to render aid to son, Holmes said.
EMS transported the 24-year-old to Saint Barnabus Hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Holmes.
NYPD officers responding to the scene took the father into custody without injury.
The two off-duty officers were unharmed during the shooting but were transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi for evaluation.
