NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A fatal officer-involved shooting in Queens on Friday evening occurred when a man, who sources say stabbed his wife during a family party at which children were in attendance, charged responding law enforcement officers with a knife.
Four officers—two uniformed officers assigned to the area, their Sergeant and the Sergeant’s operator—responded to a report of an assault in progress at 9944 62nd Ave. in Rego Park at about 6:50 p.m., police said.
The call came from the second floor, and as soon as officers reached the top of the building's staircase, officials said that a knife-wielding man charged at them.
“As soon as they walk out the staircase, a male is charging at them with a knife. They give commands to drop, the male didn’t stop,” NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said.
According to Maddrey, bodycam footage of the incident shows that the Sergeant discharged his taser as two officers fired their weapons simultaneously.

Responding officers began to administer life-saving measures, and the 46-year-old man was transported to an area hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries.
The officers were also transported for medical evaluation.
Police confirmed that there was a family gathering, with children in attendance, at the apartment before the shooting.
Reportedly, the gathering was the first birthday party of the deceased’s grandchild.
Sources said that the man stabbed his wife during the party, and police confirmed that a woman with stab wounds was discovered on the scene.
“We see a female exit an apartment, she’s holding her stomach, she’s bleeding from the stomach.”
Maddrey said that the woman suffered at least two stab wounds and is in an area hospital receiving treatment. Her condition is unknown.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing by the NYPD’s Force Investigation Division, police said.
