NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- One of two runways at LaGuardia Airport remained closed on Thursday, a day after a sinkhole opened and forced repairs and inspections of the airfield at the busy airport.

Delays were expected throughout the day Thursday as those repairs and inspections continue, according to Port Authority, which said the airport is still open for flights.

There were 95 delays and 40 cancellations at the airport as of 11 a.m. Thursday, according to FlightAware.

“LaGuardia’s Runway 4/22 remains closed as emergency construction and engineering crews complete necessary repairs and proactive inspections of the airfield as quickly and safely as possible,” Port Authority said in a statement.

“We fully expect to be able to reopen the runway before flight operations tomorrow,” the statement continued. “Pending the results of continued inspections and repairs an earlier reopening is possible.”

The sinkhole was discovered late Wednesday morning as Port Authority crews were conducting their daily morning inspection of the airfield, according to officials. That led to flight disruptions that were compounded by severe weather Wednesday evening.
