NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A sinkhole shut down one of two runways at LaGuardia Airport on Wednesday, officials said.

The sinkhole was discovered around 11 a.m. as Port Authority crews were conducting their daily morning inspection of the airfield, according to officials.

The sinkhole was found near Runway 4/22, one of two runways that serves the airport.

“The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible,” airport officials said in a statement.

Port Authority, which runs the airport, “is in close communication with airlines and airport partners and will continue providing updates as conditions evolve,” officials said.

Travelers should expect delays and cancelations, especially since the forecast is calling for severe storms in the NYC area on Wednesday afternoon and evening, officials said.

There were more than 150 flight delays and nearly 200 flight cancellations at LaGuardia on Wednesday, according to FlightAware.
