NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The city is owed millions of dollars in unpaid parking and moving violation summonses issued by police officers, traffic enforcement agents, and city speed- and red-light cameras, a new study shows.

Data by Streetsblog found that from 2016 to 2020, out-of-state vehicles made up 38 percent of all unpaid tickets which totaled over $3.5 million.

According to the study, vehicles with New Jersey plates racked up the majority of money in unpaid tickets over the five-year span with only 35 percent of drivers having paid back the 1.2 million tickets that were handed out.

“These findings speak to the need for executive leadership, from Gov. Hochul and the state DMV in particular, to collaborate between the different states,” Marco Conner DiAquoi of Transportation Alternatives told the Streetsblog website.

Other states listed as top offenders in the study include Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, and Connecticut.

New York plates accounted for 78 percent of parking and moving violations but only 14 percent of those tickets are unpaid the study added.
