NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – State Sen. John Liu responded amid outrage over a tweet he posted suggesting the Capitol siege was more frightening to him than the 9/11 attacks.

As the Capitol riot was happening Wednesday afternoon, Liu tweeted: "Seeing the Twin Towers crumble is no longer the most frightening moment of my life."

The tweet led to more than 2,800 responses, many of them critical.

Among those who responded was Catalina Lauf, who tweeted: "Tell that to the families of those who died that day."

Liu, a Democrat who represents parts of Queens, responded to the criticism, telling 1010 WINS, "My tweet on Wednesday was an emotional response."

He said it was "frightening to see the American people's house being attacked, not by foreign terrorists, by fellow Americans."

"Watching the events unfold on Wednesday afternoon, not having any idea that it would somewhat subside a little bit later, that was also frightening," he said.

Liu said he was not retracting his original tweet because there was no contradiction with his current statement. He told the New York Post that "9/11 is by far the most horrific and outrageous thing I've witnessed."
