NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – The owner of Carrie Bradshaw’s West Village apartment in HBO’s “Sex and the City” is asking the city for permission to install a steel and cast iron gate at the base of the stoop.
The proposed gate at 66 Perry St., directed at the city’s Landmarks Preservation Commission, is meant to keep away tourists who have been climbing the steps, ringing doorbells, and leaving behind graffiti, according to the owner.
In the 16-page document to the city, the owner explained that despite installing a chain with a "No Trespassing — Private Property" sign years ago, fans of the show continue to cross boundaries, sometimes quite literally.
“They climb over the chain, pose, dance or lie down on the steps, climb to the top to stare in the parlor windows, try to open the main entrance door, or, when drunk late at night, ring the doorbells,” the statement read.
Louise and Neil Moffett, tourists from London, were spotted snapping photos in front of the stoop. “It’s just on the sidewalk, you know, we take a picture,” Louise told 1010 WINS. “But if people would do that. That would annoy me for sure.”
“My home is now a global tourist destination,” the owner wrote in her letter, adding that the proposed gate would serve as a necessary barrier between her and the show’s devoted fans. After two decades of hoping the fascination with her home would fade, the owner has taken a more formal step to protect her property.
Because the property is located in the Greenwich Village Historic District, any modifications must first be approved by the Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure they align with the area’s historic character. The application is currently under review.
The third season of "And Just Like That" is set to premiere later this year with Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis reprising their roles.
