NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A person of interest turned himself in to police on Friday in the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old boy in Queens earlier this week, sources said.
Monday morning's shooting outside a Dunkin’ at 208-15 Linden Blvd. in Cambria Heights claimed the life of Sanjay Samuel, a high school freshman who was on life support at Cohen Children's Medical Center before his death Wednesday.
Police released images Thursday of a male sought in connection with the shooting. It wasn’t immediately clear if the person seen in the photos is the one who surrendered Friday.
According to police, Samuel was shot by a male on a scooter who rode up to Samuel and his friends as they were outside the Dunkin’ around 8:20 a.m. During the confrontation, the scooter rider fired a shot, striking Samuel in the head.
At a briefing on Tuesday, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said “gang” activity was behind the shooting. Kenny also said Samuel wasn’t in the gang database and didn’t have a criminal record.
Kenny described the person police were searching for as a 16-year-old “troublemaker in the area,” the New York Times reported.
