NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Long Islanders may soon get a new area code as numbers beginning with 516 are running out.

According to the New York State Public Service Commission, the new area code would be given to new phone numbers based in Nassau County.

No number has been decided on and the commission is currently asking for the public’s input on a new petition filed by SomosGov, Inc., and is seeking “an effective date of the new area code in the first quarter of 2023.”

Somos filed the petition in early September after it was revealed that the current 516 area code will “exhaust its supply of available numbers in the third quarter of 2023.”

Current phone numbers with the 516 area code will not be affected and any new area code would only be assigned to new phone numbers once 516 is fully exhausted.

There are several ways that members of the public can comment on the petition.

According to the commission, residents can visit dps.ny.gov and search Case 21-C-0473 and post comments there; or send comments to the Secretary to the Commission at secretary@dps.ny.gov.

Residents can also call 1-800-335-2120 to submit comments, 24-hours a day, or mail comments to Secretary Michelle Phillips.

The commission is considering holding virtual public statement hearings.
