NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Ten years ago this week, the remnants of Sandy, a Category 3 hurricane, merged with other storm systems to create a superstorm that devastated the New York City area.
Sandy roared ashore in Brigantine, New Jersey, on Oct. 29, 2012. The storm swamped coastal communities and knocked out power from Lower Manhattan to the Jersey Shore.
When all was said and done, the storm was blamed directly for 48 deaths in New York and 12 deaths in New Jersey.
Sandy was among the costliest storms in U.S. history, causing $36.8 billion in damage in New Jersey and $32.8 billion in New York. For many, the personal impacts are still being felt a decade later.
