NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Nearly one million people gathered in Times Square on New Year's Eve to watch the ball drop and celebrate the beginning of 2024, the Times Square Alliance estimates.

The ball began its 60-second descent at 11:59 p.m. on Dec. 31, and at the stroke of midnight, it illuminated the 2024 numerals while confetti dropped on revelers, fulfilling a bucket-list wish for many participants.

Performances entertained the attendees, with Rita Ora and Ryan Seacrest hosting artists like LL Cool J, Jelly Roll and Sabrina Carpenter at One Times Square.

Mayor Eric Adams was among those who appeared on the Times Square Alliance's live webcast of the festivities at the Crossroads of the World, and he spoke to co-host Jeremy Hassell about the highs of 2023, and looking forward to 2024.

"With all the challenges, New York City is so resilient, the people are amazing. This is what we promised, this is what we committed," Adams said. "Never count New York City out. 2024 is our year. And these amazing people behind us and here celebrating right here in the middle of Times Square."
