NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A knife-wielding man was shot and killed by police in the Bronx on Thursday evening after he chased a woman and then charged at them, the NYPD said.
The shooting unfolded around 6:15 p.m. at E. 233rd Street and Barnes Avenue in the Wakefield section.
Two plainclothes narcotics officers were driving when they saw a dispute that Chief of Department Terence Monahan described as a continuation of an argument between the woman and the knife-wielding man on Wednesday.
“He came up to her, he was threatening her, said he was going to kill her for not calling him,” Monahan said. “She got away yesterday. As she sees him again today, he approaches her, and the dispute escalates again today. A few people tried to intercede on the corner. She ran and that’s when our police officers got out of their car.”
Monahan said the sergeant and detective had their police shields around their necks when they exited the car.
“The sergeant and detective both identified themselves as police numerous times and yelled to the man to drop the knife,” Monahan said. “At this time, the man turned around and ran towards the sergeant and the detective.”
The two officers fired five or six shots at the man. He was pronounced dead at Montefiore Hospital.
He has not been identified, but police said he was in his 40s.
The woman was not injured. The two officers were taken to an area hospital for observation.
Other knives were recovered at the scene and on the suspect, according to police.
Citizen App video shows a heavy police presence at the intersection after the shooting. Police were still on the scene Friday morning amid an ongoing. Investigation.
