NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police shot and wounded a man wielding a kitchen knife who came at officers inside a Queens home on Monday, the NYPD said.
Police responded to 84-65 Parsons Blvd. in Briarwood at about 10:45 a.m. after a family member called 911 to report an emotionally disturbed 22-year-old man throwing and shattering glass against the wall. The officers were granted entry to the home by the 911 caller.
"The male was in the kitchen when the officers arrived. Upon seeing the officers, the male retrieved a large kitchen knife and began to advance toward the officers," NYPD Assistant Chief Christopher Mcintosh said during a news conference hours after the shooting.
According to McIntosh, attempts to contain the man by shutting a glass door separating the living room were unsuccessful, and he ignored commands to drop the knife.
"The armed male was able to push through the door and continue to advance toward the officers with the kitchen knife in hand," McIntosh said. "At this point, officers discharged their weapons at the armed male."
The man was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The cops were also transported to a local area hospital to treat minor injuries.
The incident was caught on body camera and the NYPD's Force Investigation Division is investigating.
