NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will start slapping travelers who fail to wear masks or face coverings in its facilities with $50 fines beginning Monday, the agency said.

Face coverings are currently required at all Port Authority-managed facilities, including New York City airport terminals, PATH stations and trains, AirTrain stations and trains, the Port Authority Bus Terminal, the George Washington Bridge Bus Station and the Oculus.

"This move is part of [the] agency's commitment to supporting the New York and New Jersey state requirements on mask wearing in transportation facilities," the release said.

"The Port Authority will continue to put primary emphasis on voluntary compliance," it added.
