NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An incendiary device was hurled through a West Village business window early Wednesday morning, police said.
The object was thrown into the plate glass window of a smoke shop on Christopher Street just after 3 a.m., shattering the glass and starting a small fire. Shards of glass littered the street as police investigated hours later, with seven crime scene markers laid out.
Neighbors told 1010 WINS that the blast shook them out of bed, but there were no injuries, as all those living upstairs were able to get out of the building safely. The upstairs windows were also shattered.
Both police and firefighters responded, and police are looking at the incident as a possible arson. Six people were seen fleeing from the scene.
It is not yet known why the business was targeted, but neighbors told 1010 WINS that the window to the smoke shop—which opened recently—had its windows broken about a week earlier.
An investigation is ongoing and there have been no arrests.
