NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 1-month-old baby girl was not killed by her family puppy, but rather of unknown causes before she was bitten by the dog, the city medical examiner revealed Wednesday.

Police initially believed that the 6-week-old pit bull and German shepherd mix puppy was behind the tragic death of Kiyanna Winfield at NYCHA’s Queensbridge Houses early Tuesday morning.

Winfield’s mother called officers to her apartment at about 6:30 a.m. when her and her partner woke up and saw the puppy biting the newborn, police and sources said.

“The cause and manner of death are pending further study and will require additional testing, but the medical examiner has been able to determine this is not a fatal dog mauling,” the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner said in a statement.

Sources told 1010 WINS that injuries inflicted by the dog all occurred postmortem.

Animal Care Centers of NYC declined a request for comment.

An investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed in the infant’s death.
