NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Garden City officers arrested a Queens man on Monday for allegedly stealing a Rolex watch worth over $65,000 from a Long Island jeweler in July.

According to detectives, at 4:20 p.m. on July 18, Costica Alexandru, 27, entered into Gross Jewelers located at 840 Franklin Ave. in Garden City and requested to look at multiple Rolex watches.

While the salesman was showing the merchandise with the display drawer open, Alexandru distracted him as he removed a Rolex Platinum 40MM D-D watch valued at $66,750 then placed the watch in his pocket and eventually left the store without paying for the merchandise, officials said.

After an investigation was conducted, Alexandru, of Queens Village, was arrested without incident. He was in possession of three forged licenses, authorities said.

Alexandru was charged with grand larceny and possession of a forged instrument. He will be arraigned on Tuesday, Oct. 15.
