NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Queens grand jury indicted a 36-year-old man on Friday for allegedly running over his wife with an SUV and stabbing her while their three children looked on, according to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.
Security footage from in front of the couple’s Flushing home showed Stephen Giraldo used a white Ford Explorer to run down Sophia Giraldo, 41, around 5:20 a.m. on Dec. 27, prosecutors claim.
He allegedly told the couple’s three children, who were in the car with him, to “keep your seatbelt on” before ramming his wife who was standing in front of the vehicle.
The force of the collision caused the car to turn on its side, at which point Stephen crawled out of a window and stabbed his wife with a knife, according to officials.
The victim suffered severe neurological damage, broken bones and a punctured liver from the attack.
“This is a heart-breaking crime. This savage attack, committed in full view of the victim’s three young children, stirred outrage across the city,” said Katz. “Our thoughts are with the victim and her children. We will hold accountable the person responsible for this brutality.”
Stephen faces charges for assault, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child and criminal possession of a weapon.
He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
