NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — An elementary school in Queens was evacuated Friday morning after a contractor struck a gas main that caused a leak, authorities said.

It happened near P.S. 95 at 179-01 90th Avenue in Jamaica.

The FDNY told 1010 WINS that at about 8:58 a.m. they received a call reporting that a gas main was struck at 88-40 179th Place between 90th and Hillside avenues.

National Grid, who was on the scene and able to control the leak by 11:30 a.m. following an all-hands effort.

They confirmed that a contractor, not working for them, struck a gas main right behind the school.

The school was evacuated and streets remain shut down for emergency response.

"Out of an abundance of caution, this school is being evacuated to a nearby building due to an outside gas leak, off school property. The school has communicated with families, FDNY is responding, and all students and staff are safe.” a Department of Education spokesperson said.
