NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- The New York City area was menaced by heavy rain, high winds and potential tornadoes on Friday, with rotten weather expected to continue into Saturday as the remnants of Hurricane Nicole barrel through the Tri-State after lashing Florida.

Preparation for Nicole, now a tropical depression, was already well underway Friday, with Gov. Kathy Hochul directing state agencies to be at the ready for flooding and wind damage. New York City activated its flash flood emergency plan and warned residents of vulnerable basement apartments to be on alert.

The MTA said it aimed to keep trains running despite the threat of flooding. “We will have crews on standby during the storm to respond quickly to any weather-related issues to make traveling as easy as possible,” said Richard Davey, president of the subways.

Showers were already moving across the Tri-State Friday afternoon, with rain set to get steadier into the evening, according to AccuWeather.

The heaviest pockets of rain hit between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday.

There will likely be another blast early Saturday. The downpours could cause flooding on streets and sidewalks, as well as along the shores and in poor drainage areas.

Damaging wind gusts will be embedded in the showers and thunderstorms. Gusts could top 50 mph along the Jersey Shore and on Long Island; in the five boroughs, they may exceed 30 mph.

There’s a chance isolated tornadoes could even spin up through Saturday morning.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory from Friday night to late Saturday morning for the Jersey Shore and Long Island.

The storm will rocket away by Saturday morning, making way for a partly sunny and breezy day. The high will be 70 as humidity lowers.

It turns chillier Saturday night, with lows dropping to about 45 in the city and to the 30s in the inland suburbs.

The cold weather continues Monday and Tuesday, when it will be sunny with highs in the upper 40s.

In Florida, Nicole caused at least three deaths and swallowed once-wide stretches of beaches area after coming ashore near Vero Beach early Thursday. Some homes toppled into the Atlantic Ocean, and dozens of hotels and condo towers had to be evacuated.

The rare November hurricane was the first to hit the Bahamas since Hurricane Dorian, a Category 5 storm that devastated the archipelago in 2019. For storm-weary Floridians, it was only the first November hurricane to hit their shores since 1985 and only the third since record-keeping began in 1853.
