NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – A robber accidentally shot his accomplice in the chest as they tried to mug a man on Manhattan's West Side, police said Wednesday.

The NYPD arrested the man who was shot after he walked into a hospital to be treated, but investigators are still searching for two additional suspects in the chaotic robbery in Hell's Kitchen on the morning of April 28.

According to police, a 35-year-old man was at West 50th Street and 12th Avenue around 4:25 a.m. that Sunday when three males exited a white sedan and tackled him to the ground.

They tried to steal his necklace, but he fought back and one of the robbers whipped out a gun and shot at him, police said.

Instead of shooting the victim, he shot his accomplice in the chest and left leg, according to police.

The victim was not physically injured and managed to hold onto his property.

The trio got back in the vehicle and fled the scene empty-handed.

The suspect who was shot, identified by the NYPD as Benny Polanco, of the Bronx, later walked into NYU Langone Health for treatment and was taken into custody.

He faces charges of attempted murder in the second degree, robbery in the first and second degrees, assault in the first degree, gang assault in the second degree, and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.
