NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) –Former New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer is potentially eyeing a mayoral bid for the 2025 election, according to reports.
Stringer, who in the 2021 mayoral race faced sexual harassment accusations, is currently speaking with strategists and potential donors, weighing his options for a primary challenge against Mayor Eric Adams, sources directly familiar with the matter told the Daily News.
Stringer spoke with local Democratic strategists to assess the possibility of his potential campaign.
One source told the Daily News that Stringer gave the impression that he intends to run in the 2025 Democratic mayoral primary.
His approach to the 2025 race would leverage his name recognition and financial expertise gained during his tenure as comptroller.
Sources indicate that Stringer's decision, anticipated by January, will hinge on three elements. Firstly, the ability to secure enough funding, followed by the need to garner significant support. Lastly, effectively managing family dynamics will play a key role in his final decision.
Stringer himself has remained non-committal publicly, stating no current plans to run but did not rule it out.
“I’m gratified every day,” he told the Daily News. “People come up to me on the streets and tell me they voted for me [in 2021]. Others who didn’t vote for me tell me they wish they had.”
In preparation for a possible campaign, Stringer has reached out to long-term supporters for financial backing, sources said.
1010 WINS has reached out to Stringer's office for a comment.
Despite the setbacks in his previous campaign, including the loss of endorsements following the harassment accusations, his experience and established political network put him as a notable contender in the upcoming mayoral race.
If Stringer decides to run he would be running up against Adams who is dealing with an FBI investigation into his 2021 campaign and a recent sexual assault allegation, which he denies.
Other Democrats, like Senators Jessica Ramos and Zellnor Myrie, and even former Governor Andrew Cuomo, are considering mayoral bids.
