NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Malikah Shabazz, the daughter of civil rights icon Malcolm X, was found dead inside her Brooklyn home Monday evening.
The 56-year-old was found by her daughter inside her Midwood home on East 28th Street.
PIX 11 reported that officers received a 911 call from Shabazz's daughter at about 5 p.m.
NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea told the station Tuesday morning that her death is not believed to be suspicious and added she had been ill prior to her death.
"At this point in time, working with other authorities, the medical examiner, and speaking to the family, she had been ill for a period of time," he said. "And at this point, nothing appears suspicious."
A police spokesman told the Associated Press her death appeared to be from natural causes. A cause of death has not been released.
Malikah and her twin sister, Malaak, were the youngest daughters of Malcolm X. Their mother, Betty Shabazz, was pregnant with the twins when their father was killed.
Martin Luther King Jr.'s daughter, Bernice King, wrote on Twitter, "I'm deeply saddened by the death of #MalikahShabazz. My heart goes out to her family, the descendants of Dr. Betty Shabazz and Malcolm X."
Shabazz's death came days after two men convicted of her father's 1965 assassination were exonerated.
