NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Staten Island mother is suing a bus company and the Department of Education after her six-year-old daughter woke up from a nap on the bus on an unfamiliar street.
Jenna Carlsen’s daughter was on her way to kindergarten on May 27, but she fell asleep during the ride.
Bus driver Steven LaRocca failed to check if the bus was empty and drove to his home almost a mile away from the school, according to the lawsuit.
The girl woke up alone and afraid. When she exited the bus, she had no idea where she was.
A woman found her crying alone on the street, and checked her backpack for family contact details.
Carlsen was shocked when she got the call. She hadn’t even known her daughter didn’t make it to school.
The lawsuit against Island Charter bus company and the DOE claims the driver was negligent, putting the child in danger and causing emotional distress.
An investigation by police did not find cause for charges.
Neither Island Charter nor the DOE immediately responded to requests for comment.
