NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police charged a former staff member at the Carmel Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center on Staten Island for allegedly punching an 83-year-old resident.

Angelica Nelson, 62, punched the woman’s hand multiple times on Nov. 3 while trying to get her to let go of a bathroom railing, according to authorities.

The resident has a mental disease and is unable to express herself verbally.

An aide reported the alleged incident to a supervisor two days later.

An in-house nursing supervisor and a doctor didn’t find any signs of physical injury, but Nelson was fired after a suspension and internal investigation.

Management also fired the aide who first reported the alleged attack for not immediately notifying her supervisors.

The nursing home, which is an ArchCare facility run by the Archdiocese of New York, notified police of the incident.

Officers arrested Nelson on Dec. 5 and charged her with endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically-disabled person.

The former care worker denies all wrongdoing.

Her next court appearance is slated for Jan. 25.
