NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A woman was killed and two men were critically injured when a seaplane they were in crashed into a pier in Queens on Sunday.
The single-engine plane hit a concrete pier near Riverside Drive and 158th Street in Whitestone at 3 p.m., the FDNY said.
The three passengers were rescued from the wreckage after the plane "mounted the pier and was broken in pieces," FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said.
The two men, including the pilot, were rescued by a good Samaritan jet-skier, while the woman had to be removed by the FDNY, Nigro said.
All three passengers were rushed to hospitals. The woman died and the two men were in critical condition Sunday night.
The jet-skier and two other bystanders were treated for minor injuries at the scene but refused further medical attention
Nigro said it's unclear what led to the crash and that a representative from the Federal Aviation Administration was headed to the scene.
"Witnesses said that the plane was traveling rather fast along the water, skipped twice and hit the pier," Nigro said. "The plane is on the pier and it is in pieces."
Nigro said the pilot is a local resident who is known to fly in and out of the area often. He said the plane is usually kept in a hangar outside the pilot's home.
Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted about the crash, asking New Yorkers to "keep these people and their families in your thoughts tonight."
The FAA said the plane is a single-engine Cessna 182. It said the FAA will release aircraft registration information after investigators confirm it at the scene. The National Transportation Safety Board said it is investigating but will not travel to the crash site.
