NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 19-year-old man suspected of stealing a car died Sunday after he plummeted from a roadway near the George Washington Bridge while fleeing police, the NYPD said.

The man was initially pulled over around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the Bronx while driving a car police believed to be stolen.

He fled the traffic stop and drove south to Manhattan, where the vehicle broke down at West 207th Street and Broadway in Inwood, police said.

He then exited the vehicle and fled on foot, running south along the Henry Hudson Parkway and eventually reaching the George Washington Bridge.

Near the bridge, he tried to make a jump from the parkway to an off-ramp from the upper level of the bridge, but police believe he misjudged the gap.

He plunged to Riverside Drive below and was mortally injured. He died at NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem.

He was not immediately identified by police.
