NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 78-year-old man was hit over the head with a piece of wood by a stranger just a block away from his Manhattan home, police said.
The victim was walking on W. 49th Street, near Ninth Avenue, in Hell's Kitchen around 2 a.m. Monday when he was attacked at random by a man, according to police.
The suspect struck the victim over the head with a hard, wooden object, causing him to fall to the ground, police said.
The 78-year-old suffered pain and bruising and was taken in stable condition to Mount Sinai Hospital by EMS.
The victim, Francis Corrales, told WABC that he was walking back from a pharmacy when he was attacked just a block away from a home he has lived at for 20 years.
"He passed by me and he attacked me," Corrales told the station. "He just attacked me, hit me in the head and knocked me out to the floor."
The suspect took off down W. 49th Street after the attack, police said. The NYPD released surveillance video of him on Thursday.
