NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A suspect was charged on Wednesday in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 38-year-old man inside a Lower Manhattan subway station last week, police announced.

Luis Jose-Duarte, 48, is charged with first-degree manslaughter. The Bronx man was arrested in Manhattan just before 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

John Sheldon was riding a southbound train on the 4/5/6 line at about 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 25, when an argument broke out between him and his attacker over the assailant stepping on Sheldon’s shoes. The dispute escalated and Sheldon was stabbed in the torso.

Both men got off the train at the 4/5/6 platform of the Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall/Chambers Street station, where Sheldon was stabbed again.

He was rushed in critical condition to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

Sheldon was a resident of NYCHA’s Ingersoll Houses in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.

Jose-Durate is awaiting arraignment.
