NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police are searching for a machete-wielding maniac who robbed a boy of his sneakers on a Bronx subway train and then punched a good Samaritan who tried to help the victim.

The NYPD released images Wednesday of the suspect in Sunday night's robbery aboard a northbound 2 train in the Longwood section.

According to police, the train was rolling down the tracks near the Intervale Avenue station around 11:15 p.m. when the suspect removed the machete from a black book bag and robbed the 15-year-old victim.

He stole the teen's shoes, and when a 25-year-old man tried to intervene, he punched him in the face, police said.

The 25-year-old suffered minor injuries, while the 15-year-old was not physically hurt, according to police.

The NYPD believes the suspect is in his late teens or early 20s.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
