NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The Strokes are following up their virtual show supporting New York City mayoral candidate Maya Wiley with an in-person concert in Manhattan.
The indie rock band will play at Irving Plaza on Saturday, June 12 as part of a fundraiser for Wiley, organizers said in a press release on Tuesday.
Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., with the event set to start at 8:30 p.m., the release said. Attendees must have proof that they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, the release noted.
Tickets will go on sale online on Wednesday, June 9 at 12 p.m. The Strokes will be joined by other, yet-to-be-announced performers as well, according to the release.
In a statement, The Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas called Wiley — who is running against candidates including former presidential candidate Andrew Yang, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and former Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia — "the most grateful, gracious and kind-hearted bad-ass I’ve ever witnessed."
“The more I know her, the more I know that she is absolutely the best choice to be NYC’s next mayor,” Casablancas said. “This feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity to help elevate an incredible person to a position of power where they can protect the public — instead of the usual — managing their exploitation.”
In her own statement, Wiley said she was “so thankful to The Strokes for their support for my campaign and my vision for this city, and for their commitment to making this event happen safely and successfully.”
New York City’s primary election will take place on June 22, with early voting set to be held from June 12 to June 20.
