NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 45-year-old man faces murder and other charges after a 12-year-old boy—the son of a retired NYPD sergeant—was shot and killed while riding his bike outside a Bronx bodega on Saturday.
William Ferrer remained silent as police escorted him out of the 44th Precinct in handcuffs on Sunday afternoon. Ferrer, who reportedly has at least six prior arrests, was appearing before a judge Monday to answer to charges including second-degree murder and manslaughter.
According to officials, the victim, Jacob Freytes, was riding a bicycle to get a ball at a deli at 104 Elliot Pl. in Mount Eden when the shooting happened.
Marlyn Rosario, his 12-year-old neighbor, said she lent him the bike shortly before the incident occurred. "I was like, since I'm not going to use the pedal bike, my mom offered him to use the other bike that I had," Rosario said.
Police said the young boy was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. "Family and parents are devastated and are living in unimaginable pain," Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson said. "These damn guns, these damn guns, these damn guns."
