PHOTOS: 10 NY state landmarks honor MTV's 40th birthday

ALBANY, N.Y. (1010 WINS/AP) — Landmarks around New York state were lit in red, blue and yellow on Sunday to mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of the MTV Network.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced several locations across New York City, including Grand Central Terminal, One World Trade Center, the Kosciuszko Bridge and the East End Gateway at Penn Station.

Locations outside the city included the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, the Albany International Airport Gateway and the state fairgrounds in Syracuse.

Additional locations include the H. Carl McCall SUNY Building, Alfred E. Smith State Office Building and State Education Building in Albany.

MTV debuted in New York City on Aug. 1, 1981, with the launch of the music video, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles. The network currently reaches more than 1 billion people in 180 countries.

Cuomo called MTV "a cornerstone of pop culture" that "paved the way for a new level of media expression and appreciation" and increased political participation through its efforts to encourage younger people to vote.

"MTV was born on August 1st, 1981 in New York City with the spirit of youth and the energy of the city - to this day, with a reach of more than 1.4 billion people in 180 countries - our global headquarters is still based here; we are New York strong," said Chris McCarthy, President and CEO, MTV Entertainment Group. "We are inspired by the artists, dreamers and people of New York and are honored to be recognized by Governor Cuomo. Thank you, Governor, and thank you New York - here's to another 40 years together."
